Every year, taxpayers forget to update their address or family situation with the tax administration. The problem is not limited to misdirected mail: an outdated address can lead to being assigned to the wrong tax center, an incorrect withholding tax rate, or even tax notices sent to the old home.
Postal address and family situation: two separate declarations on impots.gouv.fr
A point that online guides often mix up: changing your address and declaring a change in family situation are two separate processes. Moving does not update a marriage, a civil partnership, a separation, or a birth. The reverse is also true: reporting a divorce does not correct your postal address.
The address change is done through the “My Profile” section of the personal space. The change of family situation (marriage, civil partnership, death of a spouse, birth) goes through the management service of withholding tax, accessible from the same space but in a different menu.
In practice, a taxpayer who moves after a separation must therefore carry out both actions: first report the family event to recalculate their rate, then correct their address so that future notices arrive at the correct location. Carrying out a change of situation and address on impots.gouv in the correct order avoids attachment errors.

Change your address in the personal space of impots.gouv.fr: precise path
Log in to impots.gouv.fr with your tax number (13 digits) and your password, or via FranceConnect (Ameli account, La Poste, MSA). Once in the personal space, click on “My Profile” at the top right.
In the “My Personal Information / My Contact Methods” box, a “Modify” button appears under the displayed address. Enter the new address, confirm. The field will then display “Your address change is being processed”.
Using the secure messaging service
An alternative exists if the profile form poses a problem. From the personal space, open the secure messaging service, then follow the path: “Write” then “Change of situation” then “Change of postal address”. This method generates an acknowledgment of receipt that can be viewed in the messaging service.
By mail or by phone
Outside of digital options, two possibilities remain:
- A free letter addressed to the public finance center to which your address belongs as of January 1 of the tax year, specifying name, first name, tax number, and new address.
- A call to 0 809 401 401 (non-premium service), particularly recommended in the case of separation if you want your new address to remain confidential from your ex-spouse.
- The online service “Change of address” from service-public.fr, which allows you to notify several administrations in one step, but does not replace direct updating on impots.gouv.fr for tax matters.
Declaration of occupancy of real estate: the forgotten step after a move
Updating your personal address is not enough when you are a property owner. Since the implementation of the declaration of occupancy of premises, every owner must indicate, in the “Real Estate” section of their space, who occupies each of their properties.
After a move, the vacated property changes status: it goes from primary residence to vacant property or rental property. If this information is not corrected, the administration may continue to consider the property as a primary residence, which skews the calculation of housing tax on secondary residences or vacant properties.
Check the “Real Estate” section after each move, even if the address change has been taken into account. These are two different databases that do not synchronize automatically.

Address as of January 1: why this date changes everything for your local taxes
The tax administration retains the address as of January 1 of the tax year to determine the competent center and calculate certain local taxes. A move in March means that the income declaration for the current year remains linked to the old home for that fiscal year.
This mechanism has a concrete consequence: the property tax or housing tax rate depends on the municipality as of January 1, not on the one where you live at the time of payment. Reporting a move during the year does not retroactively change the notices already issued.
Error on a notice already received
If a tax notice bears an incorrect address or an amount you contest, simply updating the address does not correct anything. You must submit a separate claim via the secure messaging service, choosing the reason corresponding to the tax concerned. Confusing updating contact details with contesting a tax is a common mistake that delays the processing of the case.
Withholding tax and change of family situation on impots.gouv.fr
A marriage, a civil partnership, a birth, or a separation changes the number of tax shares and thus the withholding rate. The notification is done in the “Manage my withholding tax” service, under the “Report a change” section. The administration then recalculates a new rate, which is sent to the employer or pension fund within a few weeks.
Failing to report a family event has a direct impact on monthly cash flow. A newly married taxpayer who keeps their old individual rate will often pay too much each month and then receive a late refund. Conversely, an unreported separation can lead to a balance due at the annual adjustment.
The administration does not set any strict legal deadline for these notifications but recommends that they be made as soon as the event occurs. The longer the delay, the greater the gap between the applied rate and the actual rate.
The key point to remember: update the address in “My Profile,” the family situation in “Withholding Tax,” and the occupancy of properties in “Real Estate.” Three distinct sections, three separate checks, one online space.
